On April 10 2019, ANGERME released their new double A-side single “Koi wa Accha Accha / Yumemita Fifteen”. It is the first single for the two new members Haruka Ota and Reira Ise—and the very last single for leader and first generation member Ayaka Wada. To commemorate this significant turning point for the group, they delivered the new single with a bang and every bit of heart.
The first A-side, “Koi wa Accha Accha”, is a catchy and eccentric number perfectly capturing the spirit of ANGERME that refuses to be confined by the norm. Here they break every expectation, both confusing and delighting fans in a music video that no one quite understands. They play every possible part across the different scenes—synchronized swimmers, martial artists, soccer players, judo players—but they all dance to the same beat.
The highlight is the signature “Accha Accha” dance, and the star is leader Wada who emerges in a stunning wedding gown at the end of the video. It is a fitting farewell to the idol who has steadily risen from her trainee days to where she is now, standing as the leader of ANGERME and the entire Hello! Project. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old Wada never fails to let loose and have fun even in a formal dress, as she shakes her hips along with everyone to the beat.
While “Koi wa Accha Accha” is one loud, colorful party, the single takes on a more sentimental turn with “Yumemita Fifteen”. The nostalgia starts from the title alone, a play on the group’s very first major single “Yumemiru Fifteen” that they released in 2010 as S/mileage. Nine years later Wada has come full circle; the new song is a tribute to legacy she has built from the very beginning. Tucked into the song are many homages to past S/mileage and ANGERME singles, from the glittering background reminiscent of the set in “Yumemiru Fifteen” to the dance choreography taken from other music videos. It is not only a walk but a dance down memory lane, together with the seven generations of members that have come to join her.
The best part? The lyrics were penned by fellow first generation member Kanon Fukuda, who graduated from the group in 2015. They tell the story of someone who is only able to grow up after going through the joys, pains, and most importantly the support of the people around them. It is unmistakably an ode to Wada’s story throughout her career thus far.
A culmination of 15 years as an idol in Hello! Project, ANGERME’s new single is yet another big milestone for Wada and her beloved juniors. As one curtain closes, another opens in anticipation of her next show.
Ayaka Wada will be graduating on June 18 2019 at Nippon Budokan, on the final day of ANGERME’s spring concert tour.
